History and Science of the Tanning Bed

The tanning bed has a long history, and here at the residential tanning bed guide we hope to talk to you about all the work and science that went into making the unit you hope to purchase.
Friedrich Wolff, a German scientist, brought the technology for tanning beds to the U.S. in 1978. During the 1980s, tanning beds became a very popular alternative for people who wanted a tan. Instead of wasting hours lying in the sun, a person using a tanning bed could get a tan in a few short sessions, and that was very appealing to many busy people. You have to realize that “sunless” tanning in a traditional tanning bed still involves the same ultraviolet rays that are so harmful in sunlight. Therefore, if you tan in one, the same risks are involved as spending an excessive amount of time in the sun.
In order to use a tanning bed safely and effectively, you need to understand the technology that makes it function as well as how to use it correctly. If you’re looking for a bronze tan or more olive tones, a tanning bed may well be a good choice for you. It takes two kinds of rays to produce a tan: UVA and UVB rays. The traditional residential tanning bed includes lamps which send out both kinds of rays. The UVB rays are the ones that are responsible for the production of additional melanin (skin pigment). UVB rays are strong, and a slight overexposure to them can cause major burns. A great deal of overexposure can result in skin cancer. UVA rays, on the other hand, oxidize the melanin causing it to produce the bronze color in your skin. Most of the rays in a tanning bed are the less-harmful UVA rays. When using a conventional tanning bed, you must go slowly at first and develop a base tan. This can be done by having 20-30 minute sessions, three to five times a week for about a month. Thereafter you’ll be able to maintain your tan by regularly having two or three sessions each week.
There are differences between the traditional residential tanning bed and high-pressure tanning beds. In this case, the “high pressure” refers to the air within the lamps used, because higher air pressure filters out almost all of the harmful UVB rays and operates with UVA rays alone. Using this method you can develop a deeper, longer-lasting tan much quicker than with a traditional bed. Your schedule of tanning sessions in a high pressure tanning bed are much reduced from those required using a traditional bed. You will start with the same three to five sessions per week, but they will only last 10-12 minutes each. You will only need to maintain this schedule for about two weeks. Maintenance tanning will then only require 2-3 visits a month.
If you want to speed up the tanning process and assure yourself of a high-quality tan, you can apply a tan accelerator lotion all over your body both before and after your tanning sessions. The reason for the second application is that once you’ve been exposed to UV light, the production and oxidization of melanin with continue for an extended period of time. Applying the second coat of lotion will help your skin feel cool, moisturized, and healthy. One last thing to remember while tanning is that you always need to wear tanning goggles when you are in the tanning bed. Closing your eyes or wearing your street sunglasses won’t give your eyes enough protection from the UV rays.
